The man who ruled Cuba over five decades has been described as a hero and a brutal despot, by those marking his death. Markus Wolf, senior spymaster for the ex communist state of East Berlin is one of many who was tasked with handling the security-dodging ladies-man.
During a visit to the country Castro was reported missing to Wolf by the security team he was running - sparking a frantic search for the Cuban. While anti-Castro campaigners, and the relatives of those who fled to Miami in the Seventies took to the streets in jubilation at the news of his death, many have told of their fond memories of the brutal dictator. Those closest to him have made no secret of his love of ladies, and the Latino women he kept around him.
When Castro was a failed revolutionary in Mexico in , the couple split, but Mirta took his son Fidelito to the US. During his marriage, and before the coup against Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, Fidel met his first mistress. After entering Havana in and successfully toppling Batista with the support of tens of thousands, Castro had his pick of the women. However, her existence was not known about among the public until when Castro was preparing to step down.
His list of lovers includes English language interpreter Juana Vera an interpreter named Pilar and a Cuban flight attendant named Gladys. However, the most notorious of the long list was his affair with Marita Lorenz, a German-born American.
Castro took a liking to the girl, then 19, when her ship docked in the post-revolution Caribbean. Miss Lorenz was later famed for a murder plot after being handed poison to give to Castro in Miami. The national press of Cuba kept the affairs out of the headlines but the Latino lothario kept up a powerful, masculine image which saw people excusing his treatment of women.
